My First Meeting With Bo

Using social media and the internet, the American people told Washington in no uncertain terms that letting the payroll tax cut expire on December 31, 2011 was not acceptable. You tweeted, you called and you emailed to remind Washington that politics is not a game – serving the American people is a serious responsibility and the decisions made in Congress have serious consequences on people’s lives. Eliminating the payroll tax cut would have cost a family earning $50,000 a year about $40 per paycheck, and for working families, that is real money; money that buys things like school lunches, the gas needed to get to work or visit ailing relatives, and even co-pays for doctor visits and essential prescription medicines.

The American people scored a victory when the Senate and the House of Representatives passed a two-month renewal of payroll tax cuts for 160 million workers and unemployment benefits for millions who are out of work. Watch the video and meet some of the tens of thousands of working Americans who believed that their voice could make a difference, had the courage to speak out about what losing an extra $40 per paycheck would mean for them and for their family, and reminded the politicians in Washington that governing is about helping make people’s lives better.

Difference Between P90X and P90X2

A lot of people have been asking me what's the difference between P90X and P90X2. Honestly I had no idea so I went straight to the source. Here is an exserp from a Q&A with P90X2 trainer Tony Horton.

How does P90X2 differ from P90X?

P90X is a program to help people get fit, strong, and lean. P90X2 takes it to the next level and helps you move and perform like an athlete. It's not a body-shaping exercise program. It's high-intensity, functional, core athletic training that allows people to perform better on multiple planes and in multiple sports.

What's new about the Nutrition Guide?

We've given our P90X grads more meal options. We've got vegan, vegetarian, grain-free . . . even a couple raw recipes. We understand people have different tastes, objectives, and preferences. But, all of the menus are whole, healthy, and tasty.

What are you eating these days?

Presently, I eat a lot of vegan meals. But, I also eat meals with free-range organic chicken and eggs, wild salmon, and other healthy fish.

So, we noticed that P90X is six days a week, while P90X2 is five days a week. What do you recommend people do on their days off?

A day off doesn't mean "do nothing." I'm a big fan of active rest. My hope is that people will take the 6th or 7th day and participate in something that is active but not a full-blown P90X2 routine. Go for a hike or a mountain bike ride. Take the skills you're building five days and go outside and enjoy life. You don't do P90X2 just to get better at P90X2. It's really indoor training for the outside world.

Are there modifications to the moves?

For each exercise, there are modifications and moves for people on the road who don't have all the gear. You can still do P90X2 with just gravity, a chair, and resistance bands.

That's great. So, then why would someone need the foam roller that's used in the X2 Recovery + Mobility workout?

Foam rolling will save you. It helps relieve pain, prevent injury, and improve mobility.

I already recieved my P90X2. GET YOURS NOW!

Do You think Hope Solo Has Too Much Muscle?

I actually think Hope Solo looks great. Have you seen ESPN The Body Issue? All I can say is WOW. Yes she has muscle but she is lean. I have young daughters and I would much rather they look up to her than some of these other female personalities I see on TV. Hope is beautiful, strong and she actually has personality that she shows. She's not the same model were used too and I love her for it. We have to stop letting certain media brainwash us into thinking that every woman has to be a size zero. I say pick up a damn weight and then lets go eat!

Exercise Tips for Cancer Patients

(Today I have a guest blogger for you. Her name is Liz Davies. Liz wants to make a difference in people’s lives because she sees how cancer has devastated so many people in this world.

Studies have shown that regular exercise for cancer patients can help stimulate the immune system, reduce fatigue and stress levels, as well as strengthen the body. Exercise also stimulates the release of pain reducing endorphins and facilitates a, more restful sleep. A regular exercise routine can help keep bones strong during cancer treatments, minimizing the risk of further damage as well as maximizing the body’s healing potential. Moderate exercise can also reduce nausea and increase appetite in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments. Exercise has proven to be effective for all types of cancer including breast cancer, pancreatic cancer and even rare types such as papillary mesothelioma.

Before Beginning an Exercise Regiment

Cancer patients should always consult their physician before beginning any type of exercise routine. Radiation and chemotherapy can cause increased fatigue and nausea, so consulting your doctor will help to determine the best time to begin a new exercise regimen. Bone health is also a major concern for cancer patients, and a doctor will be able to advise you on which types of exercises may be to taxing on weakened bones. Certain medications can also affect heart rate, so it’s important to speak with your doctor about types of exercises you should avoid.

While Exercising

Cancer can lower the immune system’s ability to fight infections. It is important to disinfect any equipment being used before each use to prevent exposure to germs and infections. Start a new exercise regimen slowly to build strength and endurance. Have realistic expectations and listen to your body. While exercise should be challenging, you do not want to injure or overtax yourself. The American Cancer Society recommends exercising 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, and adjusting the intensity and duration of the work out as needed.

Types of Exercises

Yoga, Pilates and other flexibility exercises will help maintain mobility and are ideal for cancer patients who are not ready to begin a vigorous exercise routine. Cardiovascular exercises such as jogging and swimming can increase lung capacity and lower the risks of heart attacks, stroke and diabetes. Chemo and radiation treatments can result in weakened bones. Resistance training with weights can help strengthen the bones as well as rebuild muscles lost during treatment. Remember to breathe when lifting weights. Holding your breath can cause changes in blood pressure. Use controlled breaths, inhale when lifting and exhale when lowering.
